  • Inspection Information for Parents

Wed 04 May 2022 Mrs Keys

    Understanding inspections in schools:

A guide for parents and carers Estyn is responsible for inspecting a wide range of education and training provision in Wales, and will soon be inspecting your child’s school.

How do inspectors take account of my views of the school?

Estyn wants to know your views on the school. You can do this by: • completing an online questionnaire via the direct link or QR code provided by the school. The questionnaire is the easiest way of making inspectors aware of your views. • attending a meeting with inspectors.

The school will inform you of the date and time. How will an inspection benefit my child? An inspection tells you about the standards and quality at your child’s school. It gives the school an expert view on its work, outlining what it does well and helps it to improve. Who inspects the school?

The inspection team is led by a Reporting Inspector who has considerable experience of teaching and education. Each inspection team also includes a lay inspector and a peer inspector. Lay inspectors have not worked as teachers in a school, while peer inspectors are headteachers or managers from another school.

Each school may nominate someone to liaise directly with the inspection team to keep the inspectors informed about the school and its work. How will the school be inspected? Inspectors follow the guidance set out in these two documents: What We Inspect; How We Inspect How will inspectors take account of my child’s view of the school?

During the inspection, inspectors will ask groups of children how they feel about the school, their work and how well they are getting on. All learners in key stage 2 and above will have the opportunity to complete an online questionnaire before the inspection.

How will I know the inspectors’ views on the school?

Inspection reports are published on the Estyn website 45 working days after the start of the inspection. The governing body will also send you details of the report. What will be included within the report? The report will have overall evaluations on: • learning, wellbeing and attitudes to learning • teaching and learning experiences • care, support and guidance • leadership and management

    What happens after an inspection?

All schools must produce an action plan based on the recommendations in the inspection report. The inspection team will consider and report whether the school requires any follow-up activity. The three types of follow-up activity are: Special measures: this is the most intensive level of statutory follow-up. It involves a small team of Estyn inspectors making regular visits to review the school’s progress following the publication of the inspection report Significant improvement: involves a small team of Estyn inspectors visiting the school to monitor progress about 12-18 months after the publication of the inspection report Estyn review: this is the lightest touch of follow-up, as it is not statutory. It involves reviewing the progress the school has made towards addressing the recommendations highlighted in the report about 12-18 months after the publication of the inspection report

  • Latest isolation advice - 5 days isolation

Mon 31 Jan 2022 Mrs Keys

Important changes to the Self Isolation Rules from Friday 28th January 2022

    What does this mean?

From Friday January 28, the legally required isolation period in Wales for all those who test positive for Covid-19, including children, will be reduced from seven full days to five. The first full day of isolation is the day after the onset of symptoms or the day after a positive test if a person is asymptomatic.

These changes also apply to anyone who is in isolation now

To leave isolation, you will need to take an LFT on day 5 and remain in isolation until you have two consecutive negative results, 24 hours apart. The earliest someone would be able to leave isolation is on day six after a second negative lateral flow test.

    See the example below:

Tested positive/developed symptoms on 28th Jan – This is day 0 of isolation

29th Jan     day 1 of isolation

30th Jan     day 2 of isolation

31st Jan     day 3 of isolation

1st Feb       day 4 of isolation

2nd Feb      day 5 of isolation

    Take your first LFT test

3rd Feb       day 6 of isolation.

Take a second LFT (24 hours after first on one day 5

If the LFTs on day 5 and 6 are negative, you can end isolation. If not, keep testing daily (24 hours apart) until you get two negative LFTs.

On day 11, you can end isolation even if you are still testing positive. In this example, day 11 would be Feb 8th.

  • Cases of Covid 19 in Nursery/Reception/Year 1/Year 2/Year 3/Year 5 and Year 6

Tue 18 Jan 2022 Mrs Keys

    Dear Parents

There have been two or more positive cases of COVID-19 in your child’s class.

Although there is still a risk of you/your child getting COVID-19, you/your child can continue to attend school provided you/your child remain well. If your child starts to display any of the COVID-19 symptoms please do not send them to school and arrange a PCR test immediately. You can book a PCR test online through the NHS website at www.gov.uk/get-coronavirus-test or by calling 119.

For additional peace of mind, unless they are aged under 5 years, we strongly advise that your child undertakes LFD tests for 7 days to try and prevent spreading infection more widely in the school. We recommend that these daily tests are taken before eating/drinking in the morning before going to school. It is acknowledged that for some learners it may not be possible to undertake daily testing i.e. those with special educational needs or those that are too young to accept repeated testing.

Please note that if your child is under the age of 5 years old they should not take COVID-19 tests unless directed to do so by a doctor or if you believe a test is absolutely necessary and in the best interests of your child.  They should however remain off school if they have a high temperature until it returns to normal and they feel better.

Many schools in Wales are supplied with LFTs for regular testing - these LFTs, or others that may be in your house can be used to test your child if they are a confirmed contact. If you/your child require more LFTs and cannot access tests online or through your local pharmacy please contact us as we hold a supply of LFTs for pupils.

We know that in general COVID-19 doesn’t affect young people as seriously as it does others in our families and community. But to help keep others safe, there are still some things you/your child can do to reduce the risk of spreading the infection. For the next 7 days we recommend you/your child:

    • Avoid contact with anyone at greater risk from the effects of COVID-19 infection.
This includes older people, those with long-term health conditions, and anyone who hasn’t received a full course of COVID-19 vaccine.
    • Be alert for new symptoms.
If you/your child start to feel unwell, no matter how mild the symptoms are, you/your child should stay away from school and get a PCR test.
    • Limit contact with large groups of people as much as possible.
Try to keep the number of people in close contact with you/your child to as few as possible. Avoid large gatherings outside of school, social events (e.g. birthday parties) and after-school activities.
    • Keep washing hands regularly.
This is still an important way to limit the spread of many infections, including COVID-19.

If you/your child remain well after 7 days you can return to normal activities.

We know how disruptive the last year has been for everyone. This term we want to keep you/your child in school as much as possible, but we also want to keep our communities safe from the effects of COVID-19. We hope that you will be able to play your part by following the advice above.

If you have any questions please ask Mrs Keys

  • Case of Covid 19 in Year 6

Tue 11 Jan 2022 Mrs Keys

    Dear Parents

There has been a confirmed case of COVID-19 in your child’s Year 6. Your child should continue to attend school and unless confirmed as a close contact by TTP does not need to conduct daily Lateral Flow Tests (LFTs). However we ask that you look out for symptoms of COVID-19 in your child.

The three key symptoms of COVID-19 are:

    • a high temperature: this means that they feel hot to touch on their chest or back
    • a new, continuous cough: this means coughing a lot for more than an hour, or 3 or more coughing episodes in 24 hours
    • a loss or change to their sense of smell or taste: this means they’ve noticed they cannot smell or taste anything, or things smell or taste different to normal.

If your child has any of these three key symptoms, please do not send your child to school and arrange a PCR test for them immediately. You can book a PCR test online through the NHS website at gov.uk/get-coronavirus-test or by calling 119. Anyone else in your household with any of these three key symptoms should also isolate and take a PCR test.

Please note that if your child is under the age of 5 years old they should not take COVID-19 tests unless directed to do so by a doctor or if you believe a test is absolutely necessary and in the best interests of your child. They should however remain off school if they have a high temperature until it returns to normal and they feel better.

If any member of your household has tested positive for COVID-19, we also recommend that children 5 and over should take a daily lateral flow test every day for seven days. This should start on the day a member of your household is confirmed positive from a lateral flow or PCR test result.

Anyone with a positive test result should follow the rules set out at gov.wales/self‑isolation. If the test is negative, your child can return to school as soon as they feel better.

As a school we are not always aware of personal circumstances and there may be adults or children with conditions that increase the risk from COVID-19 in your household or extended contact group. You may choose to limit contact with anyone at greater risk from the effects of COVID-19 infection as a precaution.

This letter is for information so you are aware to look out for any symptoms of COVID-19. You may receive further correspondence from the Test Trace Protect (TTP) team who may provide you with further information and instructions.

We know how disruptive the last year has been for everyone. This year we want to keep your child in school as much as possible, but we also want to keep our schools and communities safe from the effects of COVID-19.

    Yours sincerely

  • Bryn Celyn & Active Travel Cardiff

    Wed 06 Oct 2021

We are excited to tell you about a project starting at our school this year. Bryn Celyn Primary School is working with Cardiff Council to encourage and enable more pupils, parents and staff to walk, scoot and cycle to school.

Walking, cycling and scooting for the journey to and from school has many benefits.  These include improved health, less carbon emissions, a chance to chat and improved concentration in the class room!  Less people driving to and from school means a safer street environment for everyone outside the school gate.

In the Autumn term 2021 we will be working with Cardiff Council’s Schools Active Travel Team to understand the barriers our pupils, parents and staff face on the school journey.  We will kindly ask you to complete a travel survey which will give us an insight into the challenges you face in getting to school.

If you and your family are interested in walking, cycling or scooting more often then please visit the Council’s www.KeepingCardiffMoving.co.uk/schools website for more information.
